Schmidt Fine Art Gallery Collection: An Eye to the Earth

It’s not every day that we’re able to see something so small in such detail. At first glance, it can be hard to get a sense of the scale; only the leaf behind it really provides a reference for the crab’s size. Even then, it looks almost alien. We have so few occasions to bend down and look at the world below our feet that we miss most of what goes on at that level, in all its beauty. It is the purpose and the pleasure of a photographer to capture those scenes that most of us would otherwise miss, and to put them in plain sight.

Did you know a dolphin's eye is equally suited for vision in and out of the water? What is more, they're able to hear 10 times the upper limits of humans. And obviously, they're adorable. Dolphins are often spotted cuddling, nestling, and playing with their young and members of their pods.

Schmidt Fine Art Gallery Collection: Banff National Park Waterfall and Ice Dam by Chalbaud

This stunning photo taken in Banff National Park by Aurora Chalbaud comes incredibly close to recreating the feeling of standing at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The icefield is a prominent feature of this image because of its position in the centre and the contrast in colour. The composition of this landscape captures the viewer’s attention immediately with the bright white icefield in the midground that melts seamlessly into the deep blue stream below it. The ripples in the stream are interrupted by scattered rocks protruding from the ground.
