How to Get People to Take Notice of Your Photography

Posted by Jacob Hawthorne on

If you love photography, it’s probably your dream to get it to the next level. If it catches the right person’s eye, you may end up in a major exhibition or you may get a gig at a major magazine.

The question is, how can get from here to there? How can you get your amateur photography noticed by the powers that be so you can start making a name for yourself? Well, here are some tips that may help.

Boost Your Skill Level

If you show your photos before you’re ready, it can do more harm than good. If a gallery or magazine passes on your work, you may shut a door that’s not likely to reopen.

Therefore, you will want to work on your skills before submitting. Practice and be critical of yourself. You may also show your photos to family and friends to get their opinion before having an expert take a look.

Get Your Name Out There

Don’t expect people to come knocking on your door out of nowhere. You have to work on building a following if you want to get approached for an offer. In order to get your name out there, here’s what you need to do.

Start a Blog: If you know a lot about photography, you may consider starting a blog. This will get you better known in photography circles, and it can even establish you as a thought leader in your field. As a bonus, you may also be able to make some money off subscriptions and advertising.

Enter a Photography Contest: A photography contest will also help you gain recognition. The people running the contest will notice you, your fellow contestants will get familiar with your style, and if you win the contest, it will help you build your following.

Get on Social Media: Social media is a necessary promotional tool in any field. Sign up for an account on the platforms you think are best suited for your style. Post regularly including your shots as well as helpful tips. This will engage users so they start noticing your work.

Join Forums: There are several photography forums on the internet where you can share your work and network with other photographers.

Do Some DIY Publicity

The internet provides artists of all kinds of opportunities to do their own publicity. Here is what you may do to boost your career. Online Magazines and Photo Sharing Sites: If you look on the internet, you will find plenty of magazines and photo sharing sites that may publish your work. Submit to as many as possible to start gaining recognition

Submit to Stock Photo Sites: Stock photo sites can also be a worthwhile venture. People will see your name every time they download your photos and may begin to follow you on other networks. Additionally, you will get a bit of income every time your photos are used.

Submit to Art Galleries: Try talking to local art galleries in your community to see if they are looking for work for one of their shows. Gallery owners typically put on shows on a regular basis so you may just be doing them a favor by approaching them. You will save them the trouble of hunting down artists on their own.

When looking for galleries to approach, be realistic. Don’t go anywhere that’s too upscale. It’s likely places like that will not even be taking unsolicited work. Seek out mom and pop type places instead. They will be more receptive and more appreciative of your participation.

Now that you know what you need to do to get your work noticed, what steps will you be taking to take it up a notch?
