Eight Ways You Can Be Making Money with Your Photography

Posted by Jacob Hawthorne on

You may do photography for fun or you may do it for art. But if you get good enough at it, it has some real money-making potential.

If you choose to make money with your skill, don’t feel like you are selling out. After all, the income you are bringing in will help you focus on the things you love, and you will also find yourself improving in all areas of your work.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, here are some lucrative areas you may want to explore.

Start a Photography Blog of Vlog

If you know a lot about photography, you may consider starting your own vlog or blog. Start by publishing content with photography tips on a regular basis. Once you build a following, you can begin charging people for subscriptions or you may be able to make money off advertising and sponsorships.

Take Head Shots

If you live in a town with a big acting community, headshots will always be in demand. Headshots tend to be pretty expensive so if you can beat out your competition, you’re likely to have customers lining up at your door.

Teach Photography

Teaching is another money-making avenue. With the internet being so accessible, you can host your own online workshops. Alternately, you can check with local community centers to find out whether they would be interested in hosting an in-person photography class. Another option is to contact a photography school to find out if they are looking for teachers.

Sell Your Photos

There are several ways to go about selling your photos. One is to start your own web site. With the right technology, you can make an attractive looking online store and sell your shots directly to customers. You can also sign up with stock photo sites. They will publish your pictures and you will get a commission every time one is downloaded.

Do Business Photography

Businesses need a strong online presence, and this includes posting attractive, professional looking pictures on their web site and social media. It is for this reason that photographers are in demand these days. Reach out to the businesses in your community to see who may be in need of your services.

Shoot Events

There’s a lot of money to make in wedding and event photography. Market yourself as an event photographer to see who comes knocking on your door.

Enter Photo Contests

If you do some research, you will find that there are photo contests taking place all over and many of these pay cash prizes. Entering your work will also help you take your skills to the next level, it will inspire you and it will get your name out there.

Get a Job as an Assistant Photographer

Check out want ads to find out if there is a local photographer in need of an assistant. They may be looking for someone to set up lights and take care of other tasks inside their studio. If you work with a successful photographer, you will benefit from learning their technique and getting the opportunity to network with other professionals in the industry.

Editing and Retouching

If you’ve done a fair amount of editing and retouching on your own photos, you may be skilled enough to work for others. A model may call on you to blur imperfections on fashion shots or a food company may need your help to make their items look more delicious. If you already have a web site that you use to advertise your business, you can easily add this to the services you provide.

Photography is an art, but if you’re not looking at the ways you can be using it to make money, you’re missing out. This article has tips that will open your eyes to the many opportunities that are out there. Which path is best suited to your skills?
